At the informal dialogue before the UN General Assembly held on 3rd of October, Bulgaria’s candidate for the UN Secretary-General, Kristalina Georgieva, presented her vision statement followed by questions from member states and from civil society. She said that the UN Secretary-General had a critical responsibility to help manage the global risks and promote change that is inclusive and that is fair. we should be able to adapt to changes we face.

Before the start of the hearing, the UN SC said that Kristalina Georgieva would be given equal opportunity as the other candidates despite that she joined the race at a later stage.

Kristalina Georgieva stressed that in a changing world, UN should keep pace with time, to renew its relevance and help those in need. In her opening remarks, she recouped an experience she had at the time she was European Humanitarian Aid Commissioner. “I remember being in my home city of Sofia with my, at that time, 18 months old grand-daughter in my hands - happy, healthy, noisy baby. And then the next day, I was in Sahel, visiting a clinic for children, walking into a room with some 40 of them. The room was quiet and this deafening silence of a room full of children who are so weak that they cannot even cry,” she said and added that in a rich world like ours this must not happen. “We ought to be able to support the aspirations of countries to meet the needs of their people.”

Kristalina Georgieva also said that UN had to adapt to challenges and to continue to maintain peace and stability worldwide.

“To play leadership role in the world, the UN must demonstrate its own power to reform, to be innovative, to be effective. Its people must also better reflect the world as it is,” she added.

Georgieva said that what she had to offer, as a candidate to the post of UN Secretary-General, was the ability to cut through complexities and bring adaptable solutions to a fast-changing world.

She added that she could bring people together “around solutions we can all support”.

“At the World Bank and the European Commission, I was privileged to lead transformational change, Georgieva said and added that the third quality she would bring was “I can get things done”.

In response to some of the questions, The Bulgarian candidate said she could raise new sources of financing to the UN. As regards migration, she has stressed that the efforts should be focused on what can be done so people don’t have to move.

The next straw poll will be held on 5th of October. It will allow the veto-holding council members to use coloured ballots.
