The liberalisation of the electricity market postponed for one year, starting from 1 July 2025

The Parliament postponed the liberalisation of the wholesale electricity market for one year, starting from 1 July.

The decision was supported by 152 votes of GERB-UDF, MRF, "Vazrazhdane", "BSP for Bulgaria" and “There is Such a People”.

Thirty five MPs of “We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria” abstained and 7 others from the same group voted against.

With the adopted amendments to the Energy Act, the utilities regulator, Energy and Water Regulatory Commission, will continue to set quotas for state-owned power plants for electricity produced for the regulated market, while National Electricity Company will retain its status as a public supplier for households until 1 July 2025, at prices set by the regulator.

The BSP's proposal to postpone liberalisation for three years, which party leader Kornelia Ninova tabled during the debate after a meeting of socialists with miners from Maritsa East Mines, was not adopted.

Today, April 25, a protest of miners and energy workers was held in Sofia demanding the postponement of liberalisation and preservation of their jobs.

Later, at a meeting between caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev, the Energy Minister and representatives of the energy sector tarde unions, the PM said that the caretaker government had provided 250 million lBGN for the mines.
