The bed capacity of the infectious diseases clinics in Sofia - in "St. Anna" hospital, Infectious Diseases Hospital, MMA, "SofiaMed", is currently full almost to the maximum with uncomplicated cases of Covid-19. As at yesterday, August 3, there are 120 uncomplicated cases, 15 intensive care beds are occupied. For the time being, the capacity in the capital is not exhausted, but the increased number of cases lead to an increase in hospitalisations, Dancho Penchev, the director of Sofia regional health inspectorate, (RHI), told BNT programme "The Day Begins" on August 4.
Regarding the additional anti-epidemic measures in Sofia, Penchev specified that the order is in effect for a period of 15 days. It mentions the establishments where the masks must be worn compulsorily - medical institutions, opticians, pharmacies, retail outlets. No masks are required in gyms and restaurants. Children under the age of 6 will also not wear masks.
"The hope is that we will be able to break the wave in this period. Sofia is currently in a high plateau. To date, the number of people who tested positive for the virus is 389. On a 14-day incidence basis, they are 465 per 100,000," Penchev said.
He pointed out that there is undoubtedly a hidden morbidity.
He also said that wearing masks in public transport has made a difference. He hopes that more stringent measures will not be taken.
Wearing masks in indoor public places in Sofia mandatory from today, August 4
There will be controls for violation of the RHI order. Checks will be carried out and fines of 300 to 500 BGN will be imposed for not wearing masks.
However, Penchev said, "We are not watchers. Wearing a mask is a matter of inner conviction as well. People should protect both themselves and their relatives."
There is a trend to reduce the quarantine period, but this decision is made at national level, Dancho Penchev added.
He predicts a new Covid-19 wave in October.
