Dimitar Dinchev, who was detained for alleged migrant smuggling, served at the military air base in Krumovo. His lawyer Delcho Dzhubeliyev said that complaints had been filed against him years ago by former girlfriends, but there were no convictions. The defence lawyer said that at the moment there is sufficient evidence to link the sergeant to the crime, but there is no evidence that he will abscond, so his remand order will probably be appealed.
The woman, with whom Dimchev lives in a civil partnership, and whom the investigators detained while she was driving the car with migrants, from Lyubimets to Haskovo (Southern Bulgaria), is a doctor from the anaesthesiology and intensive care unit at “Plovdiv” General Hospital.
As of today, Dr. Irena Persenska, is also charged with trafficking, but because she is pregnant in the 7th month, she is not in custody, but released on "bail" in the amount of BGN 5,000.
The director of the hospital, where she works, Dr Genov, told BNT that he had not received any reports that the doctor had been caught driving a car after taking drugs, as Minister of Interior Demerdzhiev said this morning.
Dr Irena Persenska was on sick leave because of her pregnancy, but no complaints had been lodged against her so far and her work discipline was up to the standard, the hospital chief said.
The other detainee in the group, 25-year-old Georgi Bozhikov, who was wanted by his parents, who were unaware he had been arrested until today, appeared to be on probation.
His lawyer, Shteriu Tsarev, told BNT that he would nevertheless appeal against his detention to the Military Court of Appeal on 20 March.
Georgi Bozhikov, 25, from the village of Trud, has been missing since 10 March. His relatives have circulated an appeal on social media asking anyone with information about him to contact his mother. She said that on the 9/10 March, Georgi was on night shift at the enterprise where he works. He came home, changed his clothes and then went out. From that point on, his went missing and the family had no contact with him.
The Military District Prosecutor's Office-Plovdiv said that the three detainees were charged with migrant smuggling.
As BNT previously reported, on 10 March the pregnant doctor and 25-year-old Georgi Bozhikov transported 4 Syrians in a car from Lyubimets to Haskovo. The serviceman.was in a pilot car next to them.
On the same day Bozhikov was transporting four other Syrians, but his car broke down and he left them in the Kenana Park in Haskovo with the agreement to return for them. For this reason Bozhikov ended up in the pregnant doctor's vehicle. The migrants were travelling to Sofia, they had illegally crossed the "green" border with Turkey, the Prosecutor's office said.
