The wildfire situation in South Bulgarian municipality of Topolovgrad on 31st of August remains complex because the fire in Sakar Mountain has spread on the territories of two districts – Stara Zagora and Haskovo.
The residents of the village of Balgarska Polyana who were evacuated on Tuesday night have returned to their homes. There is no risk for the residents from the nearby villages, BNT correspondent Dessislava Petkova said.
The fire has engulfed more than 10,000 decares of forests. The firefighters have been battling the wildfire for more than 30 hours, trying to suppress it. They have set counter fire in order to limit the spread of the fire.
22 firefighting teams from the whole of Bulgaria are involved in the wildfire suppression activities, including representatives of the forestry agency and the Bulgarian Army. A military helicopter is also ready to take part in the wildfire suppression in the afternoon when the temperatures go up.
The fire fronts are three – to the village of Balgarska Polyana and Orlov Dol in Topolovgrad municipality, the village of Dripchevo in Harmanli municipality and the village of Glavan in Galabovo municipality.
There is no risk for the residents and the villages. Rescue teams are on guard around the perimeter of the settlements.
On the night of 30th of August, more than 50 people were evacuated from their homes in Balgarska Polyana and accommodated in the town-hall of the neighbouring village. About 10;00 a.m . on 31st of August they returned to their homes. The residents said they were very scared.
Three people were detained late on 30th of August on suspicions for involvement in setting the fire in Sakar Mountain. One of them was released this morning. The other two, a father and his son remain in custody. The suspicions are that the fire was caused while they were working on a pasture with a tractor. The 29 year-old man is responsible for the wildfire in the villages of Dripchevo and Izvorovo which burnt a week earlier. He was then detained for 24 hours, later released and detained again on 30th of August.
Traffic around the villages of Balgarska Polyana and Cherepovo has been limited because of the ongoing wildfire situation.
