Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism Mariana Nikolova on January 13 held talks with H. E. Narahira Hiroshi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Bulgaria.

Our country attaches great importance to Bulgarian-Japanese relations. Bulgaria and Japan have established relations of friendship, resulting from the active development of trade relations between the two countries, mutual sympathy and respect between the two peoples, said the Deputy Prime Minister.

She added that in 2019, more than 11,000 tourists from Japan visited Bulgaria, and visits of Bulgarian citizens to Japan last year went up by 36.3%. She added that the visits of tourists from Japan are mainly for leisure, vacation and business.

According to her, their preferences to visit Bulgaria are related to cultural and historical tourism and less visited destinations, visits to classical concerts and opera, the Rose Festival in Kazanlak, the Rose Valley and others. Unfortunately, last year, due to the pandemic, we saw a drop of more than 80% in visits, she added.

The Deputy Prime Minister also commented that despite the coronavirus pandemic, the promotion of bilateral cooperation in the area of tourism remains a priority for Bulgaria. The signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Tourism and the Japanese Travel Agency this year will also contribute to this, Minister Nikolova explained.

H.E. Narahira Hiroshi shared the opinion of Minister Nikolova that it is extremely important for Bulgaria and Japan to maintain good cooperation between them.

It is important to develop the exchange in the area of tourism, he added. According to him, Bulgaria has a lot to show to Japanese citizens - nature, history, spas and delicious food. During the meeting, the possibility of Bulgaria to take part in an international exhibition in Japan in 2025 was also discussed.
