Police in the coastal city of Bourgas arrested two Ukrainians for stealing money and gold amounting to 100 000 BGN from an apartment in Bourgas. One of those arrested has refugee status in Bulgaria. The two already have previous sentences in Ukraine for similar crimes. Today, November 21, the Bourgas court remanded them in custody.
Entering the courtroom, Ruslan Dubrovsky, 45, and Denis Sheytanov, 37, claimed they were beaten by police and were not guilty of the theft.
"Look at my wounds. They hit me, electrocuted me for 30 minutes, interrogated us without a lawyer and without an interpreter. I didn't sign anything because I'm not guilty," said Denis Sheytanov.
"He did nothing against the law, I was with him the whole time. He just ran away from the war," explained Ruslan's wife Zlata Dubrovsky
According to investigators, however, the two stalked their victims when they left the apartment, used two cars to avoid being spotted, and large sums of money were found in their apartments.
"It is noteworthy that the two perpetrators are quite skilful in their actions," said the head of the Bourgas District Prosecutor's Office, Maria Markov.
"The searches carried out revealed a very large arsenal of tools for unlocking and breaking doors and boxes I will mention some of them - splinters, screwdrivers, files, blanks, wrenches, a total of 135," said the director of the regional directorate of the Ministry of Interior in Burgas, senior commissioner, Kaloyan Kaloyanov.
The two will be investigated whether they are also involved in other thefts. And the prosecutor's office will check whether they were really beaten while they were in custody.
