More than 300 volunteers took part in cleaning the Mesta riverbed near Belitsa (Southwestern Bulgaria) on March 30. During the heavy rains a few months ago, the raging waters of the river and its tributaries brought tonnes of waste from unregulated landfills. The goal today was to clean not only the polluted areas around the river, but also to encourage greater self-awareness in people regarding the cleanliness of the environment.

In addition to volunteers, employees of the municipal administration took part in the initiative entitled "Let's clean the Mesta River together". According to them, the most important thing is to set a personal example for the children.

The municipality has established control and fines are imposed on members of the public who do not dispose of waste in designated areas. Unfortunately, most of them cannot pay them.
Containers for separate collection, as well as for green waste, have been set up in the town of Belitsa and the villages. Further 60 are to be purchased soon.
