The danger of avalanches in the big mountains is expected to increase due to the warming of the weather, Tervel Totev from the Mountain Rescue Service, told the Bulgarian National Television on 30th of January. He urged tourists to go to the mountains with good equipment, be aware of weather forecast, take notice of avalanche reports and have mountain insurances.
People who like winter sports are advised to go skiing and snowboarding only on designated slopes and not use the northern and northeast slopes of the big mountains, as well as on the western side of Stara Planina Mountains.Southern slopes are not risky, but skiing there requires preparation.
The weather in the last few days is not very good, as for Pirin there is a high avalanche danger, for Rila - significant and for Vitosha is medium. It should be taken into acount that there are local climatic conditions in the big mountains, which is why the avalanche danger is high, Totev said.
Avalanche danger in Pirin mountain will increase as weather is expected to get warmer.
Tourists should be aware of the sharp warmin. Hurricane winds are expected at a height above 1,800-2,000 m, especially in Vitosha and Stara Planina. They should go to the mountains well prepared, with charged phones and mountain insurance.
