250 Firefighters and Volunteers Try to Extinguish Wild Fire in South Bulgaria

The forest fire near the Blagoevgrad village of Stara Kresna, which broke out on 13 July, has grown and spread to an estimated size of 800 decares. The fire spreads rapidly and the terrain of the area makes it difficult for the teams to work.

Georgi Parmakov, the director of the Blagoevgrad fire brigade, said there are 250 firefighters and 17 fire engines located on the entire perimeter of the fire. He did not make any claims as to when the fire can be extinguished, as conditions on the site are extremely complicated. Helicopters for aerial firefighting are on standby, but are not needed at the moment.

District Governor Bisser Mihaylov added that there are many volunteers on the spot from the municipalities of Sandanski, Blagoevgrad and Strumyani. There are employees of the Rila and Pirin National Parks as well as those from the Southwest State Forestry. There is also a first-aid emergency team on site to assist if necessary. There is no danger for the residents of the nearby village of Stara Kresna, which is 3 km away from the fire.

The post-fire restoration of the forest is estimated at BGN 600,000.

The fire has been managed by the team of firefighters and volunteers and is now under control.

Georgi Parmakov, the director of the Blagoevgrad fire brigade, said that as long as the climate conditions remain constant and there aren't any strong winds, the fire will remain contained and eventually extinguished.

An investigation has began to look into the cause of the fire. Likely, it is caused by human error.
