Bulgaria’s Parliament established an ad hoc committee to identify potentially dangerous and specific cases of radioactive contamination in the drinking water on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria.
The Committee will examine the causes of the contamination and its consequences for the health of the people. It will have to propose legislative changes, actions and measures to overcome the existing risks to the environment, life and health of Bulgarian citizens.
The ad hoc committee will be set up for a two-month period and will include two MPs from each parliamentary group. Georgi Kolev from the "United Patriots" will be appointed chairperson and the members will be Stanislav Dechev and Alexander Nenkov from GERB, Atanas Kostadinov and Manol Genov from BSP for Bulgaria, Yordan Apostolov / United Patriots /, Dzhevdet Chakarov and Djajan Ibryamov from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Polina Hristova and Andon Donchev from "Volya".
The committee was set up because of the frequent cases in the country of continuing and persistent exceedance of the maximum permissible level of uranium and alpha activity in drinking and household, as well as because of the doubts raised about the concealment and delay of information about the contamination.
