The Appeal Court in Plovdiv ruled on 24th of January to overturn the suspension from office of the Mayor Ivan Totev, which was ordered by the District Court.
The decision of the Appeal Court was welcomed with applauses.
Totev was accused of malfeasance in office in relation to the choice of contractor for the building of the new zoo in the city of Plovdiv. According to the prosecution, the mayor‘s act resulted in damages to the municipality to the amount of 1 million BGN.
The Appeal Court found that Totev’s official post would not impede the investigation. The magistrates ruled that there were not enough grounds that the mayor might influence the witnesses.
The decision of the court is final and is not subject to appeal.
Totev said he was satisfied with the decision. He added that he would assist the prosecution to make a thorough investigation to clarify the situation and expressed hope to dismiss the charges against him.
