A water blessing ceremony of the monument to Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski was held on 14 July as part of the events to mark the 180th anniversary of his birth. The event took place at the Military Academy "Georgi Rakovski" in Sofia. The monument to Vasil Levski was inaugurated on 26 November 2016.
The ceremony was attended by Bulgaria’s President Roumen Radev, MPs, ministers, the mayor of Sofia and many others, among them relatives of Levski - Hristina Bogdanova.
In his speech, President Radev said "let this monument be a sign of the coming generations that where there is Bulgarian spirit and patriotism, Levski will live on."
Vasil Levski is regarded as the Apostle of Freedom for having played a large role in the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. He ideologized and strategized the revolutionary movement, triggering a nationwide uprising through a network of secret regional committees.
