On 26th of July, flight LH543 took off from Bogota with 191 passengers on board and landed with 192. 38-year-old Bulgarian Desislava K. gave birth to a baby boy, Nikolay, during the flight over the Atlantic Ocean.
Both the mother and the baby are in a good condition. There were three doctors on board that assisted the birth alongside the cabin crew.The mother thanked everyone who helped deliver Nikolay. Most likely, only the coordinates will be entered on the birth certificate of the child, as he was born somewhere 12,000 meters above the Atlantic Ocean.
In order to provide the mother and her newborn child with medical care as fast as possible, the captain decided to make a stopover in Manchester, before continuing to Frankfurt as planned. At 13:09 local time the plane landed in Manchester with 192 passengers on board. The mother and her child were picked up by a medical team and the rest of the passengers continued on their journey.
Lufthansa said births like this are rare. The airline allows pregnant women to fly only until the end of the 36th week of pregnancy.
