Bulgarian Institution Hit by the Global Ransomware Cyber Attack

A Bulgarian institution has been claimed a victim of the global cyber attack, which has hit many people and countries across the world, BNR reported on 15^th of May. The Bulgarian Ministry of Interior services working against cyber crimes have already been notified. For the time being, the Ministry of Interior does not officially confirm the news, nor does it tell which is the institution affected by the attack.

On 14^th of May, the MoI Directorate for Combating Organized Crime advised the citizens in Bulgaria and the institutions what to do in order not to prevent hacker attacks.

Friday's cyber-attack has affected more than 200,000 victims in 150 countries, another one may come quite likely on Monday, Europol Chief Rob Wainwright says.

"At the moment, we are in the face of an escalating threat. The numbers are going up; I am worried about how the numbers will continue to grow when people go to work and turn (on) their machines on Monday morning,” he said.

The same said the former head of the American National Intelligence, James Clapper. According to him, it is a very, very serious problem.

Experts believe that new versions of the virus should be expected, and the size and economic value of Friday's damage is unclear.

The virus seeks to seize control of computers until the victims pay a ransom.

The ransomware, called WannaCry, locks down all the files on an infected computer and asks the computer's administrator to pay in order to regain control of them. The exploit was leaked last month as part of a trove of NSA spy tools.
