Bulgaria’s President Refers to the Constitutional Court in Relation to CETA

Bulgaria’s President Roumen Radev referred to the Constitutional Court with a request for a binding interpretation of constitutional provisions regarding the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union and its Member States, the press secretariat of the head of state said on 18 July.

The request is for an interpretation of the provisions relating to the conditions for the tyerms of ratification and implementation of such mixed international agrements (Art. 5, para. 4 and Art. 85, para. 1, item 9 /, the participation of Bulgaria in EU affairs (art. 4, para. 3 ) and the country’s economic development (Art. 19 and Art. 20).

The interpretation of these provisions is important for the national legal system and for the participation of our country in the construction and development of the EU, the press release says. It will help Bulgaria to establish itself as a predictable partner in international relations. The clarification of the precise meaning of constitutional provisions will also be helpful when in the future similar agreements related to Bulgaria’s EU membership are concluded.
