Customs officials found undeclared currency to the equivalent of nearly 430,000 BGN during an inspection of two lorries leaving the country.
On 28 September, 2022, a lorry with a trailer, with Turkish registration, arrived at Kaptain Andreevo border crossing, travelling from Switzerland via Bulgaria to Turkey. The lorry was selected for a thorough customs inspection, during which bundles of euro banknotes of different denominations were found in the dashboard in the driver's cabin.
The total amount of currency found was 150,650 euro, equivalent to 294,645 BGN. In the dashboard of another lorry, two days earlier on 26 September, 2022, customs officers found 68 500 euros (133, 974 BGN. The lorry was carrying goods from the Netherlands via Bulgaria to Georgia.
Prompt proceedings were initiated by investigating customs inspectors under the supervision of the Haskovo District Prosecutor's Office, territorial division - Svilengrad. The drivers of the two vehicles, Turkish citizens, have been charged with failing to declare in writing the currency carried across the country's border, which is external to the European Union, and the value of the cash is particularly large - a total of BGN 428,619 for the two cases.
