Farmers Will Be Compensated for Crop Damages from Hails and Floods

Farmers, whose crops were destroyed by hailstorms and floods could receive indemnities by the end of the year, Bulgaria’s Minister of Agriculture, Roumen Porozhanov, said on 6 July. He explained that full compensation would be paid to producers with 100% damaged crops.

Minister Porozhanov said that more than 250 applications for 158,000 decares of land had been submitted so far, and their number was expected to increase. The district commissions on agriculture visit the damaged agricultural areas and prepare reports, Porozhanov said. He added that the budget for this year had not foreseen money for such compensations, but there was an opportunity to secure the funds from a redistribution of savings in the European subsidy programmes of the agricultural sector.

The minister undertook to quickly prepare an analysis on the damages resulting from the recent hailstorms. He told journalists that the ministry's team would do its best to begin paying compensations for the adversely affected crops by the end of this year, BTA reports.
