Bulgaria’s 43rd National Assembly held its final sitting on 26th of January. The sitting took place a day before the 43rd National Assembly is dissolved. (President Rumen Radev signed a decree for dissolving it on 27th of January).

In the last working day, the leaders of parliamentary groups made an assessment of the work done since the beginning of the term.

We, the MPs of the 43rd National Assembly are leaving today, but Parliamentarism remains, the Speaker of Parliament Tsetska Tsacheva said before ringing the final bell.

It is a merit for all of us that we did not work surrounded by iron fences, police cars and uniformed officers, Tsacheva said making reference to the previous National Assembly which also finished its term earlier amid protests against the then ruling government of PM Oresharski.

“We had a good dialogue with the civil society and were the most accessible and transparent public institution, “ she noted. Tsacheva said that there would be early elections and joined the expectations they would be fair and honest.

What the MPs of the 43rd National Assembly did not fulfil before being dissolved was the outcome of the November 2016 national referendum on changes to the electoral system and the relevant changes to the electoral legislation. The anti-corruption law will also be left for the next National Assembly.
