Fire-fighters on September 15 continue to battle the big wildfire, which is raging between several villages on the border of the districts of Stara Zagora and Haskovo in Southern Bulgaria. The fire has engulfed thousands of decares of mixed forest, grass and shrubs. There is no danger for people and settlements.
Due to the strong wind, the fire was constantly changing its direction, and the efforts of the fire-fighting brigades were focused on protecting people and their property.
Gergana Mikova, Stara Zagora District Governor: "There is always such a rsik, especially with the conditions we have - rugged terrain, strong winds, but thanks to the expeditious work and the fire-fighting management, you see that things are relatively calm at the moment. I say relatively because it's not something we can control."
The fire is on a large front of about 10 km. 20 fire-fighters are battling it. People in nearby villages are worried the flames may reach them.
The fire started from an abandoned almond forest. It is most likely caused by human negligence, but it is possible that it was intentional. An investigation is ongoing.
