Minister of Justice Tsetska Tsacheva commented on 19th of June that it would be possible by the end of the year for Bulgaria to fulfill all the recommendations of the European Commission, as set out in the January report on Cooperation and Verification Mechanism.

Sepaking to Bulgarina journalists in Brussels, she noted a CVM mission of the European Commission was in Bulgaria earlier in June and the country presented an update on the measures and deadlines for the implementation of the recommendations. She added that there was a delay in the dfrafting of of changes to ensure a more even distribution of the workload among judges and prosecutors.

“We have committed to regularly inform partners about progress. Progress has been made,” she said and expressed hope that the CVM for Bulgaria would be over by the end of 2018, as the report in January hinted, but noted it depended on how successful Bulgaria would be on the implementation of the recommendations.

The Justice Ministry is actively working on anti-corruption legislation, Tsacheva went on to say, BTA said. "I have promised the government, and hence, the Bulgarian people and our partners, that the darft will reach the plenary hall for a debate in September," she said.

Tsacheva is on a working visit in Brussels in connection with the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council in 2018. She said she met with representatives of the General Secretariat of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council to discuss the preparation for the Presidency. The minister expects that the priorities of the EU presidencies of the Estonia-Bulgaria-Austria Trio will be endorsed on Tuesday by the EU General Affairs Council in Luxembourg, which will be attended by Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.

Tsacheva said that during the EU Presidency, Bulgaria would have three priorities in the area of justice: the establishment of EU prosecution service; drafting a new justice strategy for the period 2019-2023, and the adoption of a regulation on the recognition and implementation of court decisions relating to child matters. Tsacheva expects that the EU prosecution service regulation will be approved by the European Parliament this autumn.

On 20th of June, the Bulgarian Justice Minister will meet with the leaders of the European Parliament Committees on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and on Legal Affairs. Tsacheva will also talk with European Commission Deputy Secretary-General Paraskevi Michou.
