More than 30 people were reposrted injured after two chain reaction car accidents on both lanes at Trakia motorway near Ihtiman in the morning on 5 July. They have been hospitalised in five hospitals in the capital city of Sofia. Two of the injured are in critical condition with a risk of death.
More than 40 cars were involved in the multi-car crash. 12 ambulances arrived on site.
The rescue operation continues. Routes to the nearest hospitals are provided. Taffic on the motorway is diverted at Pazardzhik to other routes. The same is done at the exit from Sofia.
The situation is really complicated. The cause for the acident is a large landfill fire sending clouds of smoke into the sky above the motorway leading to poor visibility. There was fog and some drivers were driving at a high speed.
