A protest of energy workers and miners from the "Maritsa East" complex took place on March 29. A procession of vehicles passed through several towns and blocked the exit to "Maritsa" motorway in Harmanli for an hour.

The protesters demand that Bulgaria should not pay the high carbon prices and that the enterprises in the Maritsa complex should continue working as long as possible.

"If we don't pay for carbon emissions, our electricity would cost 45 euros or 0,09 BGN per consumer, while now it is about 0,32 BGN," Stoyan Dimitrov said.

They say the country's economy is doomed to collapse if the plants close and household consumers will pay high prices for electricity.

"Today we are issuing a declaration to the President and Parliament to get some things done and our concern is quite high. What is happening with the Maritsa East complex is a pretty big mockery of the Bulgarian energy sector," Stanimir Georgiev said.

The miners and energy workers will continue with their protests demanding that politicians pay attention to them.
