During the Christmas and New Year holidays, on certain days and at certain times, the traffic of trucks over 12 tons will be temporarily restricted on the motorways "Trakia" and "Struma" - their entire length, and on the Hemus motorway in the section from Sofia to the p. v. "Dermantsi" in Sofia and Lovech districts. The aim is to facilitate car travel, increase capacity and improve traffic safety when many people are on the road. The introduction of the temporary traffic organisation is necessary due to the increased traffic, when the prerequisites for accidents are greater due to incorrect overtaking and the formation of columns of heavy goods vehicles.

During the Christmas and New Year holidays, traffic of trucks over 12 tonnes will be temporarily restricted on Trakia and Struma motorways along their entire length, and on Hemus Motorway between Sofia and the Dermanzi interchange in Sofia and Lovech provinces. The measures aim to facilitate car travel, increase traffic flow, and enhance road safety during periods of heavy traffic. The restrictions are necessary due to the higher risk of accidents caused by incorrect overtaking and long queues of heavy goods vehicles.

On 23 and 30 December, traffic of heavy goods vehicles leaving Sofia will be banned from 14:00 to 20:00.

On the last holiday weekend of the New Year – 4 January 2026, the ban will apply to vehicles heading to Sofia from 12:00 to 20:00.

The restrictions do not apply to vehicles providing public passenger transport.

Exceptions on Hemus and Struma motorways include vehicles transporting dangerous goods (ADR), live animals, perishable food, temperature-sensitive goods, and specialised disposal trucks.

On Trakia Motorway, in the section between Ihtiman (km 34) and Vakarel (km 23) towards Sofia, the ban does not apply to vehicles transporting dangerous goods (ADR).

In Blagoevgrad district, on 23 and 24 December between 10:00 and 20:00, reversible traffic will be introduced on the I-1/E-79 Sofia–Kulata route at the junction with Struma Motorway and the Simitli interchange. Two lanes will be provided towards Kulata and one lane towards Sofia, with additional adjustments made by the Traffic Police as necessary to manage heavy traffic and ensure safety.

Drivers are encouraged to use alternative national roads while following the permanent traffic arrangements in place.

The Road Infrastructure Agency reminds motorists to ensure vehicles are prepared for winter conditions, drive with increased attention and appropriate speed, maintain safe distances, avoid sudden manoeuvres, and not overtake road maintenance vehicles treating the road surfaces.
