The situation with the spread of Covid-19 in the country continues to deteriorate. The incidence has already reached 785 infected per 100,000 population, the National Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases reported on October 27. For the past 24 hours, the new cases are nearly 7,000. Doctors, hospitals and schools are under pressure.

The picture of the spread of the infection in the country is becoming increasingly alarming. New record surge in cases was registered today - 6,816 new cases in the past 24 hours. The test positivity rate is at 13.5%, from 50,356 tests. 124 people died in the past 24 hours, and more than 94% of them had not been vaccinated.

The pressure on hospitals is also increasing - there are over 1,100 newly admitted Covid-19 patients. The total number of hospitalisations is 7,325 people. Against this background, the Deputy Minister of Health assured that at the moment there is no problem with the beds for the treatment of Covid patients. According to him, the pressure is only on the intensive care ones. That is why the opening of further 70 beds is being considered.

He also noted the shortage of medical staff, which is everywhere. The biggest problem is with anesthesiologists. He is also considering the possibility of sending teams from small hospitals to large ones.

The Infectious Diseases Hospital in Sofia has 2 wards for treatment of Covid-19. In the early afternoon, 117 patients with coronavirus were admitted, given that the wards have a maximum of 120 beds. There are also 10 infected children, including two babies.

"The situation is dynamic. We do not turn patients away," commented Prof. Dr. Tatiana Chervenyakova, the head of the infectious disease hospital.

There are no resuscitation beds in the hospital.

"There are not enough anesthesiologists," Prof. Dr. Tatiana Chervenyakova said.

It is difficult and it is harder and it is incomparable with what we have experienced so far.

"There is a big deficit of specialists like me, even without the pandemic, and now we are divided into groups that have to take care of Covid hospitals, and at the same time other diseases have not stopped. From this point of view, the shortage of staff is extremely acute," said Dr. Ivan Kolchakov, anesthesiologist and member of the Management Board of Sofia Med hospital.

And although the most serious problem is with the shortage of anesthesiologists, there is shortage of medical specialists everywhere, Deputy Health Minister Dimitar Petrov said. Therefore, the option of sending teams from small hospitals to large ones is being considered. At the moment there are intensive care beds available in the Obstetrics and Gynecology hospitals.

"But they cannot be used for other purposes. There are still beds availlable, but we expect to run out of them in the coming days, so the goal is to increase their number," he said.

Doctors admit that with this wave there is a better organisation in the distribution of patients, but nevertheless the medical institutions are edging towards capacity.
