Another tragic accident, as the 18-year old Alex Angelov from Byala passes away in the hospital following a fatal beating in front of a nightclub over a cigarette. The boy fought for his life for 9 days in the University Hospital in Rousse, but eventually his head injuries resulted in his fatality.
This event caused a wave of discontent. Immediately after the accident, ordinary citizens and relatives of the boy commenced a three day protest demanding a trial and punishment for the attacker. 32-year-old Valentin Marinov is the man who attacked Alex in front of a nightclub. The attacker asked Alex for a cigarette, when he didn't receive one, he struck the boy. Alex fell and hit his head on the hard concrete tiles.
The municipality urges for a joint meeting between the prosecution, the police and the directors of the two secondary schools in the town to discuss how to prevent such incidents.
The prosecution is expected to change the accusation against the attacker from medium bodily injury to second degree murder.
Today, 17 July, is the second day of mourning declared in the town of Byala over the death of Alexander Angelov.
Despite the incident, residents say there is no tension between Bulgarians and Roma people in the town. Members of the Roma community are firm that they do not stand behind the actions of the attacker, Valentin Marinov.
