Archaeologists discovered a fragment of an ancient inscription in Plovdiv

A fragment of an ancient inscription was discovered by the archaeologists of the Regional Archaeological Museum in Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv during the observation of construction works in the city. According to Dr. Nikolai Sharankov, a specialist in epigraphy, it is most likely an honorary inscription from a pedestal for a statue dating from the time of Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211).

Therefore, although it is only partially preserved, archaeologists believe that it adds new and interesting information to the history of Plovdiv. The inscription mentions the name of the noble citizen Veranius, tribune and primate of the imperial cult in Philippopolis. It is expected that the museum will provide additional more detailed information.
