The Council for Electronic Media at its meeting on May 10 elected Betina Zhoteva for a second consecutive term as chairperson of the regulator, the council announced.
Four of the five members of the media regulator voted to support Zhoteva, one abstained.
According to the Radio and Television Act, the chairperson is elected by the five-member media regulator for a term of one year, and the dismissal from the post is automatic upon the expiration of the one-year term.
A year ago, Zhoteva replaced Sofia Vladimirova as chair.
By law, the chairperson of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM) represents the council, signs its acts adopted pursuant to the Radio and Television Act, monitors their implementation, issues penal decrees for violations of the regulations, liaises with the state bodies, media service providers and international media organizations.
The term of office of the CEM members is six years. Three of them are elected by the National Assembly, and two are appointed by the President. New Members from the parliamentarian quota are elected every two years, while new Members from the presidential quota are appointed every three years.
