Bulgaria has offered to take in 20 children from the burned Moria migrant camp on the island of Lesbos, Greece, who are there without their parents. A total of 400 unaccompanied children are among the nearly 13,000 migrants left homeless after a fire burned down the reception centre.
A number of countries have already offered to accept migrants from the Moria camp. Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov ordered the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva and the Minister of Interior Hristo Terziiski to take the necessary steps. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already notified the Embassy of Greece in Sofia with a note of its intention.
Today, September 11, at the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Athens, a letter was received from the Alternative Minister of Migration and Asylum George Kumutsakos with a request to help the Greek side with basic necessities in order to meet the needs of the homeless residents of the Moria camp.
The letter was also sent to the other embassies of the EU countries. Bulgaria will join together with the other Member States in providing these materials.
