Divers in Burgas will take to the sea in vintage diving gear from the 1960s as part of an impressive retro demonstration marking the city’s holiday, St. Nicholas Day.
They will showcase how the old equipment was used. The gear includes a dry, mid-depth, hermetically sealed suit entered from the top, a process that requires the assistance of three people. The helmet, placed over the diver’s head, is fitted with a wired communication system and a manual valve for releasing pressure inside the suit, controlled by the diver pressing on it.
To enable descent, lead weights are attached to the diver’s chest and back, each weighing 16 kg. Finally, the diver puts on boots weighing around 20 kg, which protect the feet and help maintain an upright position on the seabed.
The divers will also demonstrate an intriguing retro closed-circuit diving system. In this setup, carbon dioxide is absorbed chemically from exhaled air, which is then enriched with oxygen and breathed in again.
This year, each participant will receive a certificate confirming their involvement in the spectacular demonstration.
