The court ruled on 11 July to remand in custody Vladimir Stoyanov, who was accused of beating doctor Albena Gagova from Sheinovo hospital in Sofia. The incident took place at the beginning of July after an argument for the placenta of Stoyanov’s new born baby. the aasualt provoked a protest of medical professionals across the country.
The second instance court judged that there was enough evidence. The court pointed out that the attack was brutal - a doctor was attacked in a hospital and suffered multiple injuries as a result of the beating. The magistrates pointed out in the motives that the accused was mentally unstable and, if at liberty, is possible to commit other crimes.
They noted that there was a pending robbery case against him, and that he was sentenced and rehabilitated in the past. Stoyanov's defence argument was that there were no witnesses and evidence that he had hit the doctor. He insisted on a less severe detention measure. He told the court that he wanted the truth to be understood and would assist the investigation.
