Bulgaria’s Prosecutior’s Office pressed charges against Georgi Zlatev, former director of Road Infrastructure Agency, in relation to the tragic incident in Echemishka tunnel on Hemus motorway. On 5th of Fberuary, an element of the tunnel lighting system fell on a car, smashed it and killed a woman inside.
Zlatev has been allegedly indicted for causing death by negligence, the prosecution said on 27th of February.
He was among the first road infrastructure agency chiefs to be dismissed from the post following the fatal incident. According to the prosecutions, he had shown negligence to his official duties related to the repair and maintenance of the tunnel.
n 2015 and 2016, the Road Infrastructure Agency was handed 3 reports regarding the poor condition of the metal structure that held the lighting fixtures and the need of repair. Zlatev failed to develop a plan for repairs, the prosecution argues. They explained that the investigation was ongoing and more charges might be pressed. Zlatev was interviewed by investigators this afternoon.
