Bulgaria’s Prosecutor’s Office pressed charges against Dr. Anton Genov, Director of Sofia District Directorate for Food Safety for malfeasance in office and coercion. This was announced by the press office of the Public Prosecution on July 14.
According to the collected evidence, Genov ordered checks and confiscation of properties from two companies that stored used frying oil from public establishments. The oil was intended to be used as a source for biofuel.
The prosecutor's office argues that these actions were not within the competence of the Foods Agency but within the competences of the Regional Inspection of Environment and Water and that Genov has overstepped his powers.
Additionally, the investigation has discovered that the purpose of Anton Genov’s actions was to obtain benefits for the company DUU EOOD, where his son was employed at the time.
Genov is also accused of attempting to force the manager of a foreign-owned company to not do business on the territory of Sofia. This company also dealt with storage of used oils.
The head of the food agency was released on bail to the amount of 5,000 BGN. Genov is also banned from leaving the country. The investigation of the case is on-going.
