Some hospitals in Bulgaria are on the verge of their capacity to accept Covid patients. There will be restructuring and redirection of medical teams to hospitals in Sofia.

“24 hours a day. That`s how we’ve been working for the past two years and it's exhausting. I have small children that sometimes cannot understand why their father is missing so often.” Dr. Nikolay Evgeniev, head of the Covid ward in the Oncological Centre in Ruse, shared.

Covid taught us that there are irreplaceable people. Without them, the fight against the virus would have been even more unfair. The current concern is the number of beds and how many more Covid patients can hospitals take. The answer is – not many. Montana is on the edge of its capacity.

“The situation in the region of Montana is critical. The two wards designated for Covid are almost full. This morning all the beds occupied. Some patients were sent home today, but immediately there are others in serious condition waiting.” Dr. Todor Todorov, the director of the General Hospital in Montana, commented.

There are 41 unoccupied beds in total in the whole Montana region. Approximately 130 000 people count on them when needed. A decision to increase the number of beds for Covid patients was made in the Regional Hospital ¨Dr. Stamen Iliev¨ in Montana. The same goes for Sofia – 30% of the beds in every hospital will be only for Covid patients.

“There is an upcoming clinic restructuring, as well as restructuring of personnel and redirection of personnel.“ Dr. Dancho Penchev, director of the Regional Health Inspectorate in Sofia, said.

In just one Sofia hospital – Aleksandrovska – the number of unoccupied beds for intensive care can be counted on the fingers of one hand. There are only 3 unoccupied beds for intensive care, the director of the hospital, Dr. Atanas Atanasov, says.

Covid wards will also be created in every specialized clinic.

“There should be wards in pediatrics, orthopedics, oncology, and psychiatric clinics as well.” Dr. Penchev says firmly.

In fact, the main question is not about the beds. It is about the doctors – again. "We might reach the stage to redirect medical specialists and doctors from some of the smaller hospitals, that do not hold the capacity and capability to bear many Covid infected,” the head of the Regional Health Inspectorate in Sofia added.

However, there is no one to redirect from one hospital to another in Montana.

“We can not find more medical specialists and doctors anywhere. The available personnel is on the edge of its capacity,¨ Dr. Todor Todorov, head of the Regional Hospital ¨Dr. Stamen Iliev¨ in Montana, remarked.
