The mass protest belongs to all members of the public. Neither the smugglers nor the mafia are in the squares today, but the Bulgarian people, who are the only sovereign under the Constitution and are determined to get their country back, Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev wrote on his Facebook account on September 10.
"I call on everyone in the square today not to succumb to provocations. The responsibility for the prevention of accidents, for the life and health of the protesters and the regular uniformed police officers lies with the management of the Ministry of Interior," the head of state wrote.
"All participants in the event – members of the public, police and gendarmerie – should remember that we are Bulgarians, that the vocation of the uniformed police officers is to take care of the security of the public and the violence between government and members of the public has no place in the future for which all decent people fight for and will achieve.
"Our moral victory as a society will be to preserve civil peace, despite the insults, provocations and demonstrative violation of democratic principles by the power that has lost people’s trust. "
"Cange is inevitable. Any stubbornness of the government only deepens the crisis," Radev added in his post.
