Declared unseaworthy and unsafe for navigation
The oil tanker 'Kairos' has been detained under an order from the Maritime Administration after being declared unseaworthy and hazardous to navigation.
The operation to remove the vessel from the waters near Ahtopol was carried out without incident. Since last night, the ship has been anchored in Burgas Bay, approximately 13 kilometres offshore from Sozopol and Pomorie.
There are three crew members on board.
The costs of the operation are yet to be calculated and will be billed to the shipowner. The government has allocated BGN 1.2 million for the tanker’s removal.
“From today, the vessel is legally detained by my order, as prescribed by law, since it is in my region of responsibility. We will then calculate all costs and present them to the shipowner. Once payment is made, it will be the shipowner’s responsibility to decide when, how, and with what means to move the vessel within a reasonable timeframe. We will continue to monitor it and may conduct periodic inspections. There are people on board – representatives of the shipowner, including part of the crew, who are overseeing the vessel,” said Zhivko Petrov, Director of the Maritime Administration in Burgas.
