THREE POLICE OFFICERS DETAINED OVER ALLEGED THEFT OF CIGARETTES

The Specialized Anticorruption Unit of Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office indicted and detained three employees of the Interior Ministry for stealing 367,218 boxes of cigarettes without excise stamps, worth 2,305,491 BGN, presenting evidence, the Prosecutor's Office said on 28th of February. The theft was carried out in 2014.

Emil Hristov, Denislav Marinov and Ivan Damyanov were detained for 72 hours based on an order by a prosecutor. Tomorrow, 1st of March, a request will be lodged in the district court in the city of Pleven, Central Bulgaria, demanding the imposition of the strictest measure “Detention on remand”.

The collected evidence shows that the thefts were carried out mainly at night. The perpetrators went into the warehouse with the help of a ladder though roof windows of the interior premises of the warehouse, from where they took out the boxes. The cigarettes were sold on the territory of Pleven.
