The Smolyan District Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a serious road accident on the Smilyan–Smolyan road (Southern Bulgaria) in which two brothers, aged 17 and 18, were killed. Two other people were injured and admitted to hospital with moderate injuries. The 18-year-old driver of the car carrying the two victims has been detained for up to 24 hours. This was announced at a briefing by Smolyan District Prosecutor Nedko Simov on September 9.
The accident occured at around 22:05 on 8 September on a straight section of the third-class road III-868, about 3km before Smolyan. Four young men from the village of Smilyan were travelling in the Opel Vectra, which was heading from Smilyan towards Smolyan.
According to initial information, the 18-year-old driver lost control of the car while travelling at an inappropriate speed for the road conditions. The car entered the oncoming lane and collided with a Honda travelling legally in the opposite direction.
Two passengers in the Opel – brothers aged 17 and 18 – were killed in the crash.
The two people travelling in the Honda were injured. The driver suffered an open fracture of the right thigh, while the woman travelling with him suffered fractures to the sternum and left collarbone.
The three witnesses to the crash – the two injured people from the Honda and the surviving passenger in the Opel – have been admitted to Dr Bratan Shukerov Hospital in Smolyan. They will be questioned when their health permits, Simov added.
Inspections have been carried out at the scene, as well as of the vehicles and the bodies of the victims. Forensic medical examinations have been ordered and autopsies are being carried out to establish the exact cause of death.
The supervising prosecutor will review the evidence gathered so far and assess whether there are grounds to extend the driver’s detention to 72 hours, with a view to asking the District Court to order remand in custody, Simov said.
The investigation concerns causing the deaths of more than one person and injuries to more than one person in a road traffic accident.
“Reckless driving, even a second of inattention, can have such fatal consequences,” Nedko Simov said. He urged drivers, particularly young ones, to be considerate on the road and not to speed, as this can lead to irreversible consequences.
