WORLD MEDIA REACTION TO BULGARIA’S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

Socialist-backed candidate, Russia-friendly political novice won the Presidential elections in Bulgaria. These are some of the comments in international media. Some media link the vote in Bulgaria with the Presidential polls in Moldova, where the pro-Russia candidate Igor Dodon won the Presidential elections.

Reuters says that a Pro-Rusian candidate won the Presidential elections in Bulgaria. The French magazine “Le Point” says that although the 53 year old Radev has no previous experience in politics, he won with ease.

The considered for pro-Russian Candidate Rumen Radev confirmed convincing victory in the second round of the elections, Ria Novosti comments.

France-Presse wrote that the Bulgarians overwhelmingly chose a Russophile president and this result prompted the current ruling party’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov to announce he would resign. France-Presse also says that the withdrawal of Borissov would lead to early general elections and a period of uncertainty in Bulgaria. DPA also notes that the presidential vote means a new government for the country.

After Donald Trump’s victory in the USA, the two Presidential elections in Bulgaria and Moldova delivered another burst of good news for Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, New York Times wrote. The paper reminds that Bulgaria’s President–elect also vowed to repair ties with Moscow and to push for the end of international sanctions against Russia.

The Wall Street Journal writes that pro-Russian candidates appeared to have won presidential elections in Moldova and Bulgaria on Sunday, giving Moscow new allies in its efforts to regain influence in parts of Eastern Europe.
