20th of March is the World Sparrow Day. The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds launched the campaign "We are counting sparrows."
On 8th of April, from 9:00 to 12:00, anyone who wishes can take part in the sparrow counting initiative. Those willing to participate can sign up on the website vrabcheta.bg. The campaign will be held for the first time. The aim is to assess population trends of the three most common kinds of sparrows in the country – the House sparrow, Polish sparrow and Spanish sparrow.
Worldwide, there are over 5,000 species of sparrows. They are everywhere except Antarctica. According to experts, the number of sparrows is indicative of the state of the environment. The alarming statistic is that worldwide in the last ten years, the number of sparrows has dropped in half.
