About 2.5 Million Bulgarians Live in Severe Material Deprivation - Eurostat

About 2.5 million Bulgarians, or nearly 3% of the country's population, live in severe material deprivation, according to Eurostat's analysis of social trends and poverty indicators in EU countries in 2016. This category includes people who can not afford to use sevral basic things that, according to European criteria, are the basis of a normal life in the European community.

About 2.5 million Bulgarians, or nearly 35% of the country's population, live in severe material deprivation, according to Eurostat's analysis of social trends and poverty indicators in EU countries in 2016. This category includes people who can not afford to use sevral basic things that, according to European criteria, are the basis of a normal life in the European community.

The most important factors for the “Severe material deprivation” rate include the ability of the people to afford payment of household bills; face unexpected financial expenses; keep their home warm; have access to a TV, car or telephone; to eat regularly; to be able to afford at least a week's holiday away from home.

According to the National Statistical Institute (NSI) data on poverty and social exclusion indicators, the proportion of people in Bulgaria in a situation of severe material deprivation kept the same levels in 2016. The highest percentage of people in a situation of poverty and deprivation has been reported for Bulgarians over the age of 65 - nearly 80% of them are in the category of "severe material deprivation".

The percentage of young Bulgarians aged 17, who suffer from material deprivation is 40% and for Bulgarians aged 18 to 64 - about 30%.

SOME 39 MILLION EUROPEANS LIVE IN MATERIAL DEPRIVATION

In 2016, about 7.8% of the EU population or nearly 39 million people were in a situation of severe material deprivation, Eurostat reports. This is a significant drop in this social trend, as in 2012 their share was close to 10% with a population of nearly 520 million people in the EU-28, according to Eurostat data.

Overall, the largest number of people living in material deprivation is reported in Italy - nearly 7 million or 12% of the population. Other high values of people living in material deprivation are reported in Romania - nearly 5 million or 24% of the population; Poland - 3 million or 8% of the population; Hungary - about 1.5 million people or 20% of the population, etc.

The lowest percentage of people in poverty and material deprivation is reported in Sweden - about 1%; Finland and Luxembourg - about 2%; the Netherlands - 2.7%; Austria – 3%; Denmark - 3.2%.

The smallest number of people in severe material deprivation were in Luxembourg - about 10,000 people, Malta - 20,000 and Sweden - about 70,000, Eurostat reports.
