The herd of bison in the Sofia Zoo increased by one more member - a baby bison was born. The baby and the mother are feeling well.

"We are happy that after the arrival of the male bison Krum last year, we have reached this awaited moment," the zoo added and said that the baby bison was born on January 18.

The breeding season of bison is in July-September and the gestation period lasts for 9 months. Their weight ranges from 500 to 1,200 kilogrammes.

In the past, the species was widespread in the prairies of North America, but bison population faced drastic declines due to overhunting and killing. Bison are almost extinct.
Today their distribution is restricted to a few national parks and reserves.
