Bulgarian customs officers seized 3,720 kg. of acetic anhydride on 6th of April at Kalotina checkpoint. The precursor used for heroin production was discovered during a check on three lories carrying apples from Serbia to Iraq.
The three lorries arrived at Kalotina border crossing, incoming to Bulgaria. They were selected for scanning which identified anomalies in the density of the cargo. In the follow-up physical inspection, the customs officers found tubes of acetic anhydride hidden among the crates of apples.
Acetic anhydride is a precursor used in the production of heroin. The total amount discovered in the lorries was 3,720 kg in 178 tubes.
A preliminary investigation was initiated in the inventory of Sofia Customs House under the supervision of Sofia District Prosecutor’s Office.
The cost of the seized amount of precursor is not very high, about 1,700 BGN per tonne, but it can produce more than 1,5 tonnes of heroin, worth more than 135 milion BGN.
