established in the town of Assenovgrad, South Bulgaria on 6th of April.
Experts from UNESCO National Committee for Bulgaria are already discussing the possibilities
for enlarging the nature reserve and its management.
The aim is to achieve economic revival of the region, mainly through tourism development and the creation of the "Red Wall" brand to support the livelihood of the local people.
Therefore buffer and transition zones are envisaged in addition to the existing zones of strict protection. The "Red Wall" reserve above Assenovgrad is one of three nominations of Bulgaria submitted to UNESCO for joining the World Network of Biosphere Reserves and receive protected status.
The Red Wall biosphere reserve is located in the Rhodope Mountains. The centuries-old beech tree forests of the Red Wall host more than 20 species of orchids including the unique “lady’s-slipper”, which can be seen only in this reserve.
