Bulgaria’s caretaker government cancelled thе concession tender for Sofia airport, the government’s spokesperson Irina Belcheva said on 5th of April.
The decision came after caretaker Transport Minister Hristo Alexiev said last month that he would he would make a proposal for cancelling the ongoing concession tender for Sofia Airport. As a reason he pointed out that the concession did not fully protect the public interest. In his words, the fee of 550 mln. BGN, which the future concessionaire has to pay, will ultimately be calculated in the size of airport fees and hence airlines will raise ticket prices.
The idea for the concession came by the government of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov with the intention to use the money raised through the concession to finance the outstanding debt of state railways BDZ.
