Bulgaria’s Prosecutor General, Ivan Geshev, on March 16 told journalists in Parliament that he had nothing to worry about the visit of the head of the European Prosecutor's Office in Bulgaria Laura Kövesi.
Geshev added that he would meet her tomorrow, but explained the two are in constant professional contact.
"I am only concerned about the violation of the law and the attacks on the separation of powers coming from politicians," Geshev said.
The Bulgarian Prosecutor General came to Parliament for the meeting of the legal committee, which is examining the amendments to the Judiciary Act.
Geshev said that he came to the meeting specifically to support his colleagues from the specialised units. He pointed out that the specialized judicial structures have shown high results in their work over the years and enjoy great international recognition.
"The closure of specialised court and prosecutor's office is not a judicial reform but a legal catastrophy. It will 'crash' cases against Bulgaria's oligarchs and lead to chaos in the criminal justice system," Geshev said.
The chief prosecutor criticised Minister of Justice Nadezhda Yordanova and “Yes, Bulgaria” leader Hristo Ivanov for drafting the changes in the dark and invited them to a public debate on judicial system reform.
According to him, if the politicians are dissatisfied with the work of the Prosecutor's Office, then it means it is doing its job well.
