Bus carriers and taxi drivers said they will be staging a big protest against the President's veto on law provisions that criminalise the unauthorized transport of passengers.
The imposed veto has caused frustration and anger because it protects the "gray economy", carriers told a news conference on November 23.
According to them, the problem with unregulated car rides has existed for 20 years and they have already reached 70% of all transport of passengers in the country. This is detrimental to both tax revenues and people's health, because there are no regulations for this type of transport - drivers do not go through mental health assessment and do not have the necessary qualifications. Cars do not meet the requirements, have no insurance and are often out of order.
Magdalena Miltenova, President of the Confederation of Bus Carriers: We want to criminalise this type of activity, because it is a socially dangerous activity. This type of activity endangers human life, the state budget. Revenues are generated there, which are not reported to the state for taxation. The losses for the state are more than BGN 40 million.
The protest is scheduled to take place on November 25.
The transportation of passengers on a number of lines in the country will be suspended. The taxis will provide services only for doctors and teachers.
