“We made the President familiar with the difficult negotiations in a very complex domestic and international situation. It is our duty to form a government because there is no other formula, even mathematical, (except a majority between GERB and the United Patriots)“ GERB leader Boyko Borissov, the winner in the snap parliamentary elections said after the consultations with President Roumen Radev on 25th of Aprill..
Boyko Borisov, GERB leader: "We had to go through all possible conflict situations that might occur in a government in order to ensure a full term of office."
"We accepted the President's greetings for our convincing victory in the elections," Borissov said.
Borisov criticized the opposition by calling it unconstructive, and was firm that new elections were not desirable.
“I heard from our colleagues in the opposition that they would help on issues of importance to the country. Just the latest populism, the latest attempt to throw dust in the eyes,” Borisov said. He noted that one of the most important topic is the country’s presidency of the Council of the EU. "That is why we have proposed to unite around this topic," he said adding this was the most constructive.
The GERB leader thanked the President that for the several months in office he understood how dificult was the responsibility to govern the state and what the challenges were, both external and domestic.
"Only in a coalition with the United Patriots we can ensure governance. The topic of ministerial appointments was not discussed, “ Borisov said. The programme and the way the cabinet will work is the most important. The ministers will be named on 3rd of May," the leader of GERB added.
In accordance to the Constitution of Bulgaria, the President holds consultations with the parliamentary represented political powers before handing a mandate to form a government to the selected Prime Minister candidate of the largest party.
On 25th of April, Bulgaria's President Radev met with the representatives of the two larger parties in Bulgaria's Parliment: the centre-left BSP and the centre-right GERB. On Monday, 24th of April, the President held consultations with the parliamentary groups of Volya, Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), and United Patriots (an alliance of three nationalist parties).
