GERB leader Boyko Borissov on May 31 announced that he does not own property in Spain. His comment came after the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office yesterday proposed to the Prosecutor General to request Parliament to lift Borissov's immunity from prosecution because of the investigation into the Barcelonagate case.
He was adamant that he would not give up his immunity and accepts the attacks on him and the “We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria” (WCC-DB) as an attempt to derail the formation of a government.
"For two years I was without immunity. You have to be blind not to see what is happening. Did the services and Minister of Interior Demerdzhiev find out yesterday about the ‘dead souls’? Why did they ask for my immunity yesterday? The aim is to prevent formation of a government. There should be a government with a normal majority. Today we will see again with WCC and DB, because the chaos is huge. Judicial reform has a cost. We passed the law on the control of the prosecutor general and they started the attack on the party of change - the audio recording was leaked," Borissov said.
According to him, the leak of the audio recording of the National Council meeting of "We Continue the Change" is not accidental.
"When has anyone ever given up immunity and had security appointed? We have to look from this point of view," Borissov asked.
Borissov pointed out that he had no concerns about the Barcelonagate investigation.
"The chaos in the state is so big now, especially with the lack of a budget. What's happening in the Balkans - 400 km away they're problems in Kosovo, presidential meetings in Europe are being canceled, the war in Ukraine is crushing. I have no worries about the investigation in Barcelonagate, none at all - I have not had, do not have and will not have any property in Spain, what more can I say.
When there is a shared responsibility, the proposed composition of the Council of Ministers should be reassuring and build trust in both formations, Borissov said.

The caretaker Minister of Interior used the expression ”dead souls” on Tuesday in Parliament when he spoke about irregularities in the distribution of aid for Ukrainian refugees by the government lead by PM Kiril Ptkov. The minister sid he submitted a signal to the Prosecutor's Office against the Petkov cabinet for alleged violations in the spending of funds for Ukrainian refugees, suggesting that some of the money was spent wrongfully (for “dead souls” - people who only on documents were in certain hotels).
