A 31 year old Iranian lorry driver, Vahid H., carrying a record amount of drugs has been detained at Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint, at Bulgaria’s border with Turkey. Charges have been pressed against him by the district Prosecutor’s Office in Haskovo over alleged trafficking of 214 kg of heroin worth 13,914,550 BGN, Plovdiv appeal court said on 26th of April.
The lorry with Iranian registration arrived at the border crossing about 9.00 a.m. on 24th of April. The driver presented documents according to which the lorry was carrying tins of spices for breading chicken.
The vehicle was travelling from Iran to Poland.
At Kapitan Andreevo, it was selected for an X-ray scan. The check showed that some of the content in the tins was darker and with a different density. The border officials identified that 468 of the tins contained brown-coloured powder, which field tested positive for heroin.
The investigation on the case is carried out by customs officer from the city of Bourgas Customs House, South Bulgaria, under the supervision of the district Prosecutor’s Office in the city of Haskovo. Witness are being interviewed as part of the pre-trial proceedings.
Vahid. N. has been detained for 72 hours. The prosecution in Haskovo will submit a request to the court to demand the alleged offender to be remanded in custody.
